Washington Youth Council: Effectively Engaging Youth in Public Policy

Question: Need Youth Input?

Answer: Washington Youth Council!

In the past most government-related agencies seeking youth involvement have typically met during school hours, in locations not easily accessible by youth, and were generally not conducive to effective youth participation. As a result, the Washington Youth Council was created in August of 2007 to more effectively obtain youth input, feedback, and involvement in government agencies and systems by engaging youth on their terms.

Mission:

To empower underrepresented youth as leaders, resources, and advocates, and to provide voice in policies and systems that affect youth through a statewide advisory council.

About Washington Youth Council:

The Washington Youth Council has provided input to the following systems, agencies and programs:

  • Washington Law Enforcement
  • State of Washington’s Mental Health Division
  • SAFE WA (State-wide Action For Family Empowerment)
  • Spokane District 81 Schools
  • Office of the Governor
  • OSPI Office of Super Intendants and Public Instruction

The council is made up of youth from across Washington State. There are currently openings on the council for five young people from various geographic regions.
